Summary of how interventions are implemented locally in each country
Egypt
The programme supported training for vocational instructors to raise awareness of disability inclusion and the importance of gender-inclusive practices and policies.
Ethiopia
Youth Network Committee (YNC) established a Subcommittee on Gender and Disability to ensure that PROSPECTS incorporated gender equality and disability inclusion across all activities. Members of this subcommittee received training on gender and disability inclusion and monitored the implementation of inclusive measures. Additionally, a TVET system assessment in the Somali and Tigray regions focused on the inclusiveness of institutions and apprenticeship programmes through a gender and disability lens. The assessment recommended strengthening capacity, providing equipment, and training in inclusive skills methodologies for people with various disabilities. A training programme was also implemented on how to consult organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs). Furthermore, a survey was launched to identify the needs and barriers faced by people with disabilities and their caregivers to inform targeted interventions and policy.
Iraq
ILO collaborated with the Women Empowerment Unit at the Directorate of Youth and Sports in Nineveh to rehabilitate a centre in Mosul. The design and facilities of the centre were developed in consultation with the Women’s Empowerment Unit to meet the needs of young women in the area. Using an EIIP approach, the project increased women's participation in areas traditionally occupied by men, such as construction. The infrastructure was made accessible to all, including accessible walkways, entrance ramps and WASH facilities.
Kenya
The programme joined a disability inclusion technical working group in Turkana county, which was part of the Kakuma Kalobeyei Integrated Social Economic Development Plan (KISEDP). This working group coordinated disability inclusion interventions in the county and built the capacity of actors to promote disability inclusion in trade. The committee prioritised conducting a survey to update disability data in Turkana West and the refugee camp.
Lebanon
Consultations were held with an organisation of persons with disabilities (OPD) social protection network to enable meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in social protection policy dialogue and reform. A capacity-building session for OPDs on social protection resulted in key advocacy messages for social protection reforms, and regular online meetings led to a proposal for a disability allowance, which was launched in 2023.
